Hi everyone! I'm a single father of three little ones, ages 2, 5 and 7, and I currently live in South Dakota. My x lives in Temecula and she has custody during the school year and I have custody during the summers. I have decided that I can't live so far from my children anymore and so I'm moving to CA in August. I had thought that it would be nice to live down the street from my x so our children could ride their bikes to daddy's "house" but I recently realized that I'd actually prefer to be farther away from her, as in up to 100 miles. I don't like the fast lane. I live in a two stoplight town. I am looking for a little town that is within reasonable driving distance of Temecula and that is out in the boondocks. I see there are so many towns there and I just don't have time to research all of them. If someone would be so kind as to give me some info about various small towns in the Inland Empire or point me towards some websites I would be so grateful. I'm excited about living near the ocean again (I'm originally from the east coast). Thank you!

Wow! Thanks, Fontucky! Warner Springs looks GREAT! Cheap housing, quiet town, perfect! Julian is more expensive according to city-data and I need cheap living quarters. Child support is rough on a guy. : )

Anyone else have any other little town suggestions for me? I really really appreciate it and I'm running out of time. I think what I'll have to do is unload my U-Haul into a storage unit in Temecula and then find a place to stay for a month while I drive off and explore Warner Springs, etc. How will I find a place to rent for only a month? My nearest relatives are in San Fran. : /

My boys are so excited about the pictures of Warner Springs. They have only known this small town we're in now (and leaving in one week) their whole lives, 7 years and 5 years. I'm trying not to communicate negative vibes about cities. I told them I wasn't sure about Warner Springs because I don't know if Daddy can find a job there but...

Thanks again! More! More!

Not sure what impact this has but from my understanding Warner Springs has been purchased by the Pala Casino.

You could look into Aguanga or Anza (right outside Temecula). There are also cheaper parts of Fallbrook. Maybe even Valley Center. Althought I've never been there.
Julian is really cute and definitely small town. And if you choose there just be sure to lock up as I have read that break-ins are happening more frequently.

Thank you so much for your advice. I checked Julian out and it is too expensive for me. I'm googling Aguanga, Anza, and Fallbrook right now. The clock is ticking loudly. : )

My latest concern is how to stay somewhere for a month, or two weeks, or whatever it takes for me to find a nice little town. All leases seem to be minimum six months. I want to get set up quickly and get visitation going again as soon as possible.

Thanks again for your help.

Fallbrook isn't really a small town - the downtown may look small, but the population is close to 50,000.

Aguanga is definitely small, but there's not really a town...

Anza is definitely small and is a real town with a couple of gas stations, several restaurants, a post office, and a few places to shop - it definitely qualifies as a "two stoplight town." My great-grandmother grew up there, and the family homestead has been in our family for over 100-years. The big drawbacks to Anza are that it gets really hot there - much hotter than Temecula - and that there are so few jobs. If you are bringing your own job with you, or if you can work for the schools or the fire department there, you'll be fine - but otherwise it's tough. Commuting to Temecula or ever further is not uncommon.

Have you considered staying in Temecula, but looking on the far edges of the city? Temecula covers a lot of area, and you can definitely find sparsely populated parts just by driving a bit. If you head West on Rancho California Road, and go toward DeLuz you'll find beautiful views, oak trees, large lots - it's really pretty! Or if you head East on Temecula Parkway (the 79) you'll find sagebrush and foothills. Try turning off on Woodchuck Road - it's a dirt road - you may not find anything, but that road will give you an idea of what is possible. You might be able to find the sparsely populated place you want, right in Temecula.

Or if none of those places are quite right, you could always drive a little further and try Garner Valley - which is almost all residences, with no commercial district - or Idyllwild - which is a beautiful little mountain town. I lived there for a year, last year, and it's definitely VERY small town. The place where you get the latest news is the post office! I loved it!

Try www.roommates.com or Craig's list for a room to rent in that area. I am moving out there soon myself and am using both to look for a place.

Default Advice from a single dad who has lived a stone"s throw!

Mr.Buptink,Single Dad,
Maybe this will help you.I am from Pittsburgh and went to college in North Dakota...now I like to call Phoenix area home.I am anonymous so I can brag by saying that "There is no Dad better than I am,"to his little boy.My Dad and Mom lived up the street and my 3 year old son who was/ismy life was"Given"to his unfit Mother and her boyfriend, who killed a State Policeman in Freeport,Ohio with a knife and was released from prison after 15 years!--These two lowlives got custody of my son 1 mile away. They were living off of my life savings that was stolen from my brokerage account while I was in the Hospital with a serious condition. This $2 million was for my son when I died..but they took it.
Understand this,I fought for 13 long years to retain full custody of my son.Fought the courts, the cops.Used lawyers, undercover retired Seals,Army gents, close friends.
Waited for my 5 days per month to be with my angelic son.Waited in the car with my dog every afternoon just to catch a glimpse of my son getting on the BUS......The cop killer and my ex wife abused my son by putting fear into him..then there were bruises and I went after the killer almost getting my hands on him...he moved 1,000 miles away because he feared me.I know where he hides.
I put my life on hold for 15 long years, with a promise from my broken frightened, fearful son..terrified of his screaming, mind washing MOTHER.
I had a stroke, then bladder cancer all due to the nightmare of living close and loving him far too much.My Dad passed, then Mom..ulcers and cancer with my son being their lives.
In June of this year my son graduated from high school and he asked me not to attend, this type of sadness I was accustomed to,but I was waiting for my son's answer that the two of us live in Temecula or Phoenix.I received my answer from my son recently."I am going to stay with Mom he said..even though she yells at me and other bad things."
I do not remember what I did but I did say this"Well I guess I will go to Temecula myself then."My son shrugged and said ok then GO." This is only 1% of the horror and heartache that living close did for my son and me.I do pray that your children and you stay close my friend. Good Luck.
