Exclamation Severe Weather Friday

Severe Weather Alert

Fiesta goers, Friday evening/night is shaping up to be stormy. Remember how I said that we don't have much going on??? I lied (well didn't get to look at the models hard enough).

A weak cold front is going to move into our area at the same time as a disturbance... and with all the moisture we have in place, that will be conducive to heavy rain and some severe weather in our region.

Preliminary thoughts: I am thinking that we'll see a few strong cells develop out ahead of a squall line move through Friday evening producing strong winds and hail. Flash flooding is possible with the heavy rainfall rates of any of the storms that do develop.

Chance of Precip: 70%

Stay Tuned!

Those storms will stay out west... those were generated by the natural lift of the mountains. The winds are coming from the southeast/the Gulf of Mexico and that pushes the air up the mountains. As that warm air moves up into cold air around it.. it creates instability and generates heavy thunderstorms, which is a common occurance in that area.

As the storms move further east, they lose the lift that generated these storms and they tend to fizzle out well before they get anywhere near us.

We'll be dry tonight with the exception of scattered mist.

However, the Storm Prediction Center does have a slight risk out for us tomorrow... it won't take much for us to get a good storm going here now through Saturday.

Yea i notice they said slight risk and our local office took it out all together. Is it just me or does the morning crew make better forecast then the afternoon crew. I was looking at the sat and their looks to be an area of enhanced lift right behind those storms. Do think it will amount to anything?

The morning and afternoon crews alternate every few weeks in New Braunfels. Some NWS offices leave their signatures in the forecast discussions, but this one doesn't so I couldn't tell you who wrote what.

As far as the lift, most of it has to do with the topography of the region.. the further away the storms get from the Sierra Madre, the quicker they'll collapse. This is a typical summertime pattern for them. Meanwhile, the storms up in North Texas are something else -- I hope they stay safe up there.
