If they have it on the menu, with the salmonella scare, their Peanutbutter Pie, is to die for. Normally gone by lunch time. The ice tea, I would recommend to stay away from. The container they brew it in hasn't been cleaned since they opened the place way back when. Order lemonade or soda at that restaurant only.

Forty years ago my grandmother would take the boys to Tip Top for the best chicken fried steak in San Antonio, just as she did with my Dad twenty years before that. All I can say is that the Tip Top chicken fried steak is the measure I compare all other CFS.

It's been around longer than I have, and I have gone there all of my 57 years! It's good food, at a fair price. If you're looking for a fancy place, look elsewhere, but if good home style cooking is top priority, this is the place.

I love the atmosphere there at lunchtime! With the decor and the elbow to elbow crowd, you feel like you are at the only diner in a tiny country town, instead of on a busy street in the middle of SA.

The food is fine, but I've never eaten anything there I would rave about. I always enjoy it though

Love it. Used to go there A LOT for lunch when one of my elderly neighbors was still alive. He went 2-3 times a week and we would sit at the counter. One day just before Christmas (don't remember the year) I was there and went to pay and the lady at the checkout register showed me the check and it said "Merry Christmas" no charge. It's that kind of a neighborhood place. They treat everyone very well but the regulars really get good service. Most of the staff knows everyone by their name.

Short ribs and macaroni and cheese. Heart stopping but fantastic.

Their Broiled fish and onion rings have been my favorite for 35+ years.

As a native of San Antonio, Tip top is famous for their Chicken Fried Steak and onion rings. Best I have ever had, though they run neck and neck with Good Time Charles. Also, Tim Duncan likes this place and had his photos taken there for ESPN magazine.

Their onion rings have no salt in the batter, so they are flat tasting and not all that great. I do like Tip-Top, but it's just OK for me and I think it's over-hyped. Just like Dough Pizza.

Wow, well, I am pretty convinced, then, that I will love Tip Top, as I absolutely LOVE Dough. Over-hyped? To each his own...but I sure don't think so.
