I've been to the ranch myself...beautiful piece of property. What a place to grow up!
But....as the OP stated, her son is not really into museums and wants to go fishing. Don't think you can drop a hook in the Perdenales at that location.

New Braunfels. Wimberly. If you are more interested in towns rather than state parks.

For weekend fishing try Calaveras or Braunig lake.

Default Actually,

Actually, that most scenic spot is not where LBJ grew up. The original house was moved.
That most serene piece of property belonged to a Johnson family relative who lived alongside Hon. Sam Johnson's place. The small Dam was also put up later on when wealth came to Lyndon Johnson.
In actuality the original Johnson Ranch proved to be unfortunately, an economic disaster. A wooden house from the hill country with a dog run and an outhouse. Father to LBJ and State Representative Sam Ealy Johnson from Blanco County failed at farming. Partly due to the scanty rainfall and rocky soil of the hill country, enormous washouts, and partly because the price of Cotton dropped from $12.00 per bale to $2.25 a bale during the depression. The Johnson Family Farm was lost during the Depression.
LBJ grew up desperately poor and only later on bought the original Ranch back plus the surrounding farms.

Seguin is also good. I had mentioned NB due to it's small town feel. But it's only about 10 miles from there.

My dad when alive liked to go fishing in Blanco State Park. That seemed to be his favourite spot. We would bring a picnic lunch while, he and my brother, and on occasion my sister would fish. It's the one place I remember the most. We would go up to Bandera, to a place called Horse Creek to mainly splash around in the water.
