Thanks for the video! Oh yeah I recognize it but don't think I've ever been in it. Looks like a landmark like the southsides Capt' Jim's maybe better! Old Guy Fieri's pretty good.

Tip Top goes way back just like Cap'n Jims, and yes, it was and is most famous for the huge chicken fried steak and huge onion rings. The place has barely (if at all) changed in all those many years. Nice to see something hang on a while longer. As for Sambo's, I believe there was one on Vance jackson or West Ave south of loop 410. It was not unlike Denny's. Political Correctness if nothing else would see the demise of Sambo's, at least in name and theme. The Black Cow? Absolutely. Those burger joints of various lineage and name always had neat burgers, fries, and root beer floats.

BTW satx56, I get so caught up in work at the office and at home that I have to disregard some of my little indulgencies like GBNF for days on end. When I come back to the site, I have to read over as much as I can to see wassup'! So I am in and out like many others here, but always come back to days of ol' San Antone.

Hey Joe, Where you been? I've seen Tip Top over the years but never went in. Maybe as a child. I think I knew the people that ran the Black Cow on Fredrbrg. at one time.

I think the last time I went into the Black Cow was in the 70's. Even then they already knew that 50's nostalgia was in the making, and they made many a reference to it being a 50's style drive-in. The food was excellent for a burger joint, and I am sure many a Thomas Jefferson High School kid owes his nutrition to that place. I was a Southsider and went to the countryside at the start of the 60's, so I did not get to go eat there except one time as a kid. Years later, it had not changed.

It may have been the 70's when I knew the people who were running it. Met them at the bowling alley on Roosevelt. Might have been a couple brothers and their father. Seems like their last name was Connor or O'Connor. One reminded me of Tommy Lee Jones. They kept telling me to get over there and they'd fix me up! Guess I missed out on some goodies. Just wasn't my neck of the woods. Wasn't the "Chief" and the"Kreme Kone" there when you went to school. No, that's right you would have still been in elementary.

Default Mickey Mouse at North Star Mall

Yep, I remember those shows with Mickey and the gang. Mom would pick me and my sister up from our school on Nacogdoches at 2:45 and we'd high-tail it over there for the 3:30 or 4:00 show. Back then, there was a court in North Star Mall near the old Rhodes store which was eliminated when the Marshall Field's wing was built in 1985-1986 and that's where I remember seeing Mickey. There was also a mall entrance to that court which ran along side Rhodes.

I'd have to ask and see if Mom took photos of those shows; for some reason I think she may have...

So what is moving into the old Albertsons locations? Livesearch maps and Google Streetview shows changes happening at the Wurzbach location.

From what I understand it a training school for the NSA. I was really disappointed with what they have done with the property. The fence just stuck in the asphalt is just tacky looking.
