Construction on the SAMs on Marshall Road and 281 has been delayed again and again. It is now planned to open in January.

Do you know if they will have a gas station there?

My guess would be "no," since that site is over the recharge zone. There are few gas stations located over the recharge zone because of the risk of a fuel spill going directly into the aquifer.

I'll check with my neighbor. He's just told me it's going to be a more upscale SAMs with a nice expanded produce section. And I get to go to the VIP pre-grand opening. Looking forward to it!

According to todays EN apparently dry cleaners and garages are OK though.

The risk with gas stations is that they have underground fuel storage tanks where a hidden leak could cause fuel to potentially seep into the recharge zone.

Most dry cleaners are nothing more than pick-up/drop-off stations, where articles from multiple locations are then transported for cleaning at a centralized facility. Garages don't normally have underground storage tanks for petroleum products. Pits can be constructed for above ground chemical storage for the purpose of containing leaks and spills.

Isn't Costco supposed to be a place for great bargains, its cheap and that's why people shop there, so its not necessarily for the affluent if I can buy a TV there for much cheaper than say Best Buy, or meat at a much better price than HEB. It's not like its an Oscar De La Renta Store or Armani, its Costco.

I think a Costco would do just fine in the Southside.

I think it has alot to do with image or maybe because there are so many HEB's on the Southside.

It probably has to do with disposable income. Costco knows through research that its stores perform acceptably in areas where the consumers who live within a 5-mile radius of the store have X amount of disposable income. Apparently, no areas on the south side meet Costco's criteria. They might someday, but they don't today. It doesn't mean those consumers are bad or undesirable. They're just not affluent enough to buy high volumes of the merchandise Costco is selling.

From shopping at both I definitely believe Costco caters to more upscale shoppers and Sam's caters to more worker bees and small business owners. We purchase different items at each store and enjoy shopping at both!

Shock: Sam's and the work upscale aren't usually seen in the same sentence but I'm going to trust my neighborhood. He's a regional manager of some sort so he should know!
Time will tell!
