so, since it's a smaller office, the computers are old (or at least they were when I was there in 2010) and it actually impacted the wait time. My wife also received pretty crummy, rude service, even with having extremely low expectations in the first place.
I agree with this, my experience exactly also. A new "mega-DPS" (my words) is supposed to open on Evers in October but exactly when in October, I don't know.

I was just there on Sept 10th and yes, the secret is out... I was in and out in 1.5 hours... I will say this though, the lady that helped me was VERY nice and told me Happy Birthday, how I looked amazing for being 42, how great my picture came out, just an all around nice person...

I have had several comrades from the fire department ask the same question. On the same day, one went to UC at 7 am and the line was around the building. He didn't get inside until after noon and was done by 3PM.... another went to DPS on S. New Braunfels with the similar results. Third guy and his wife went to General McMullen and saw the line. I recommended the Kerrville office, which they headed towards at 10am. They were back in San Antonio by noon with their license upgrades/updates while everyone else was still in line and maybe not even inside the building yet.

Good luck.

Very nice facilities and waiting room and there's a computer screen showing number called and what service desk to go to.
The girl that helped me said summers are their busiest time.

I think I was the first person to post about the Boerne office in this forum about 2-3 years ago. I hate lines of people, so I'm always trying to think outside-the-box when it comes to this kind of thing. So, I figured Boerne would be a good idea since there's less people there. I walked in that day and I was the only person in the office. It was perfect! The only bad thing about it was that the old lady (she must have been in her late 70s) didn't really know how to use a camera so the photo on my license sucks.

What about Fredericksburg? Anyone try that?

There was 6 ppl but one of them was there with two kids that I was not counting but turns out all three of them were there to get stuff. Permits and a renewal so 8 ppl total. The father and kids didn't have all they needed and had to go home to get it so they basically wasted 40 minutes of everyone's time. I was out by 9, so an hour's wait isn't too bad. A little inefficient but nice people.
