Hey guys,

I've recently moved here from NYC for work and need help getting a driver's license and then a car w/ insurance. The funny thing is I'm 25 and I've never had a license before in my life since I never needed one until I moved to San Antonio and then realized that getting around by bus here is ... not a very fun thing by any means.

My question is... just how the hell do I do it?

I've taken the written test and have the DL with the B restriction on it. However... it seems the entire system is setup for you to get a no-restrictions license while being a minor and living with your parents -- they own a car and they have you under their insurance.

As far as I can tell, I can't get car insurance until I have a car and license... I can't get a license until I practice driving... I also can't take the driving test until I have a car that is insured... I can't practice driving until I have a car and insurance... I can't get a car without a license and insurance.

So just how does this whole system work?

You can take driving lessons from a driving school, and use their car. They have individual classes for adults so you're not stuck riding around with a carload of teenagers. You can use the driving school's car to take the test also.

Otherwise, find a friend with a car and insurance, and get them to let you practice.

I should've mentioned that I checked with a few of those schools. It's typically $300 for five hours of driving lessons! Holy balls that's expensive!

I guess for now I might have to settle for finding a friend who has full other driver coverage insurance... though that may be hard :P

It is expensive, but at least you only have to pay for it once.

I think most people's insurance will cover someone else driving the car unless the other driver is specifically excluded...I've called my insurance company before when a friend or relative was going to borrow my car and they said I didn't have to do anything extra to make sure the other person was covered while driving my car.
