Movingon777 isn't wrong. My taxes go up each year due to the friggen Jordan School districts unending lust for more $$$ due to more babies burdening the system. Clean air has taken a lot more than just a BACK seat. Now the schools system is whining all over again for the losses due to the sequester. It won't ever end. They WILL eventually tax me out of my home and well........guess I'll have my wish. The mortgage company will have a house to sell and I'll be OUT of Utah to be sure by attrition.

So is Park City completely immune from the inversion that afflicts SLC or is it just not as bad? Are there other nice areas around SLC within easy commute that don't have this problem?

Park City is well out of the inversion. The little pollution they have in the winter is from cars and fireplaces. I am sure they will continue to work on it but the air is still clean. I have never seen any dirty air there.

Heber Valley is another option that you may want to research.

You are correct though if you work in Salt Lake you all will still have to endure the air quality. Unless you can work from home?

Park City is out of the SLC inversion but has one all of it's own. Park City has a "bowl" type topography also, just not to the extent that SLC has.
After living there for 16 years and driving up for work/play the last 4, there is a a definite layer of smog over the entire PineBrook/Jeremy Ranch/Kimballs Junction area.
One smart thing Summit County has done is limit the wood burning fireplaces.
One Real Stupid thing they have not done is require emissions testing for all vehicles.

Park City is nice but it is NOT anything close to urban. Also the commute to SLC will get old very quickly (~45 min. each way). Downtown SLC is as close as you will get to Bergen / Hudson county NJ. You can find a home that will be above the level of the inversion - look at what is referred to as the 'bench' on the eastern edge of the city (I think the elevation is ~ 4,800') or the upper Avenues. The Avenues is also one of the most liberal neighborhoods in the city (probably because there are lots of transplants). Don't be concerned about the complaints on real estate taxes here - it will take more than one lifetime before UT taxes come close to NJ taxes. We have a home in both states and are in a multi-year transition to UT. We spend several months / year in UT and love it during all the seasons. My Jersey Girl was surprised how much she likes it. But our needs are different from yours - we like all the outdoor activities, are not concerned about religion (and actually appreciate the Mormon attitudes / lifestyle / influences) and don't have kids to be concerned about.
I will expand on a previous post - if you don't want your kids exposed to different religions, politics or beliefs - don't leave NJ. To balance my own comment - I'm sure you'll all survive 3 years. Better if you go with an open mind.
