My wife and I plan on moving to the Ogden area in July/August 2007. I've researched Ogden pretty well and we both have a good...not a great feeling for the place. We are looking at the North Ogden/Pleasant View area to buy a home.

Just to give more insight..we're both approaching 50 years old. No kids at home and want to get back into hiking, biking and the great outdoors. Ogden seems like the best place for a retire Air Force guy that wants to be able to take advantage of his benefits. So Ogden was a first choice with Hill AFB located close by. We have vacationed in the Ogden area twice in the last two years, so we have a semi-idea of what we are getting into with a move from South Carolina to Utah. We are in the web design business. We really rely on the Internet and require a strong/fast BROADBAND Interenet connection. We currently have Cable Internet through TimeWarner that is very fast and reliable.

Question: What type of Internet service is available in the Ogden area?

Question: We are considering Eden or Huntsville as an alternative to Ogden. What are your thoughts on these two towns. I've read the posts about Logan and will also consider that area.

Question: I've been reading about the housing bubble recently. What is happening in the Ogden area? Are there an abnormal amount of houses for sale at this time? In other words, is the Ogden area becoming a "buyer market" or is it still a "sellers market" like I see real estate agents writing about?

Question: Winter weather? I've lived in Great Falls Montana for six years and the winters were not all that bad. The snow would only stick around for a 3-5 days and be gone. I have to figure the snow in Ogden doesn't stick around ALL winter long? In other words, will I have a pile of snow next to my driveway all winter?

Internet options depend on your neighborhood. You can contact Comcast (for cable modem) or Qwest (for DSL) and ask them about the area you're looking at. There are numerous wireless options as well, but again, that depends on your neighborhood.

Snow isn't bad, really. It tends to hang around in the mountains and melt in the valleys, which is just how I like it. The roads can get hazardous at times, and you will be doing some shoveling, but it sounds like you're used to snow, so this shouldn't be too different. Logan does get more snow than the Salt Lake or Utah valleys, and can be somewhat cut off during the worst storms (because you have to go through a canyon to get there).

Thanks chazcrew: Guess the Internet will dictate where I buy a home or at least redefine our needs.

How's the housing market in the Ogden area? I know Fall/Winter is the slow season for home buying but does it appear to be slower than normal with prices falling or is it business as usual?

My father has worked at HAFB most of his life (Reserves / Civillian) so I'm very familiar with the base and the surrounding area. We lived in North Ogden / Pleasant View and had about 2 arces of horse property. Our neighbors also had 4-5 horses.

Housing prices have definetly gone up in Utah as a whole. The eastern side of Hill AFB in Layton and the Fruit Heights Area has gone up significantly. Not as much as parts of Salt Lake but is much more pricey than it once was. Huntsville, Liberty, and Eden is a georgeous area! Many of my high school friends lived up there in huge houses with lots of land. We used to ride motor cycles through the alfalfa fields and snowmobiles in the winter. The "Valley" as we called it is much colder in the winter and cooler in the summer. There are 3 ski resorts (Powder Mountain, Nordic Valley, and SnowBasin) on each side of the valley. Many of the physcians and other professionals in Ogden live up there.

Land is much cheaper west of ogden in Far West, Plain City, Syracuse, etc. Check out those areas if you love horses.

Winters can be very stange sometimes. The last few winters I can barely remember driving on snow packed roads. Growing up the snow was so deep all the time that we made snow caves off the side of the house. My dad loves his snowblower and wouldn't trade it for anything.

Hope this helps!
