Hi,

Can anyone tell me what the area is like around Fulton and Hurley? Is that a dicey area? Does it depend on which quadrant you're in? We have young kids.

Thanks.

Here are some maps.

This is a skills map for the Sacramento region. In general the neighborhood gets better as move closer toward Fair Oaks Blvd and worse as you head towards the Arden Fair mall.

STI: ERsys - Sacramento, CA (Skills)

Here you can see a map of schools in the area by test score. You will have to click on it a couple of times to see Arden-Arcade.

I would describe the neighborhood as marginal. Basically there are a bunch of apartment complexes off of Howe and Fulton Avenues. People raising families in apartment complexs tend to have less education and more likely to be minority members where English isn't a first language. All of that means that test scores in the area aren't as high as schools with more owner occupants and more native English speakers. As a result even among the single family homes in the area, a lot of those have been converted in rentals.

The neighborhood isn't ghetto like Oak Park or Meadowview. Several times, I have popped into the Vic's IGA there at night and I have never had a problem nor even worried about there being a problem. Its the type of neighborhood where you might find some students living together for the first time while they attend Sac State, but you might also find someone who works at Pep Boys or sells used cars.

There is no glamour associated with the neighborhood but its cheap.
