Hi everyone!

I received a job offer in RC and I currently reside in Dallas and I'm looking for the perfect area. To tell you abt myself in a single 28 African American guy with no kids. I am gay (who cares) but I do want to be in a SAFE and I stress SAFE neighborhood within my budget. My budget is $800 or less for a 1br. I have no family in Cali so SAFETY is my #1 priority and I'm willing to adjust my budget if necessary. I have my own car and my pet cat Kiwi. I would prefer to live in a young neighborhood close to the train station.

Also, what route should I take to get there from Dallas?

Thanks

You can get a 1br apartment for around $800 in the southern half of Midtown or Southside (the southern part of Downtown) in Sacramento's central city--light rail runs along R Street. You'll be within walking distance of all sorts of amenities, and there are light rail stops at 13th, 16th, 23rd and 29th Streets, look for places within a few blocks. The commute to Rancho Cordova by light rail doesn't take long. The southern half of the central city is pretty safe--not super suburban no-crime-ever safe, but generally a young man walking around won't be messed with no matter what the hour.

I'd second wburg's recommendation. You can certainly look closer to work, and you'll probably find some safe, reasonably priced apartment complexes closer to work, but it wouldn't be a great lifestyle for a single guy (gay or not--though especially gay, as Midtown is very gay-friendly). That budget won't get you a palace, but the above recommendations might be a good fit because the areas are a little bit cheaper than other parts of the central city, but are closer to light rail. It's a pretty easy car commute too, but the light rail trip to Rancho is a breeze.

Thanks for the advice. What apartments would you recommend that I look at? Also are there seafood markets and farmers markets in the area?

Thanks

The Sunday farmer's market under Highway 50 takes up 5 acres (between W, X, 6th and 8th Street) on 2 city blocks, they have fresh fish as well as produce. There is also a great fish market on 19th and V Street. There is another weekly market on Saturday mornings at 20th and J, and a half-dozen or so during the week at various parks downtown, but if you work in Rancho you might not be able to get to them. Afraid I don't have specific apartment recommendations, really the best strategy in Midtown is to walk or bike around until you find a neighborhood that feels good and start looking for FOR RENT signs.
