I'm thinking of taking a trip to explore the Sierra Foothills which I understand are very beautiful, but it's important to me to live in a fairly liberal area. I'd also like to avoid very high Summer temps (like 90s and up). In addition, a little Winter snow is fine but not much. Does such a place exist in or near the foothills? Loads of gratitude in advance for your input!

No, you are seeking the coast.
Foothills have high temps at 100 in Aug Sept and Oct. Little snow.
Higher you go less heat=more snow.

I think places like Grass Valley are fairly liberal, and you'll have little or no snow (maybe a dusting for a day or two), but boy, it'll be hot in the summer up there.

Unlike Congress. Liberals and conservatives coexist in the foothills.

You would have to target the 3500-4000' elevation to get the climate you're looking for.

It would help if you said what size community you prefer (how small could you go?) and how close you need to be to a fairly large city (e.g., Sacramento), etc. A lot of foothill communities have changed over the years as more outsiders, inclding singles, families and retirees, have moved up there. What areas have you looked into? The term "Sierra Foothills" covers a huge amount of territory. You could be in Grass Valley, Cool, Georgetown, Placeville,Jackson,Angels Camp, Murphys, Mariposa, and even points soudh. What about a mountain town, such as Truckee (lots of skiiers and hikers there, at least seasonally) or Markleeville? You could be in a sizable town, or a tiny hamlet, or off by yourself. City Data does have voting stats on some towns. Is a job's location a factor?

But "a little Winter snow is fine but not much" does not work there

Thanks for your responses so far! As for the size of the community, I'm flexible but I prefer a location that has a good health food store or farmer's market. Work is not an issue.

Nevada city. You have to compromise slightly on temp, or choose an outskirt location w 4000' elevation or so (yes this exists fairly close to town center) and that is exactly where you find largest collection of liberals in foothills i believe.

Ps there is an element of liberalism in many foothill towns, probably because of the huge influx of bay area natives relocating to more eastern ca regions, especially if your main focus is coops and sustainable farming. That aspect of liberal minded folks crosses the boundaries even in the more conservative areas
