I live in West Irondequoit and went to the high school. I also played hockey in those days with many kids from Greece, and they would go on about all the fights they'd see every day and about how people just didn't generally get along. At Irondequoit High School, I have to say I never witnessed a single fight in 4 years there and only heard about two. Always found that interesting. People in that area just seem to get along very well.

The schools are great too. In the 90's, IHS was traditionally considered a top 100 school in the country. It has slipped a bit in recent years, but it's still a great school district. One site (forget which one) had Briarwood elementary school ranked as the top elementary school in the state.

Wow, Greece is really getting beat up on this thread.
I've lived in North Greece for almost half my life.
My kids all went to Greece schools and never got into one fight.
They wore whatever clothes they wanted and no one ridiculed them.
They received excellent educations. I believe it's more about what you're willing to put into it, no matter where you go to school.

I live in a four bedroom home built in 1976 that is worth about $120,000. My backyard is over a half acre with several mature trees. My taxes are $4000 a year. There is zero crime to speak of in my neighborhood.
I am close to the main library, town Hall, Wegmans, Aldi's, YMCA and many other businesses without feeling closed in by them. W. Ridge rd and the mall is a few miles down the road. The lake and the beach is a few miles in the other direction. It's cooler here in the summer and warmer here in the fall compared to the rest of the Rochester area.

As far as nothing to do in Rochester, I am fifteen minutes away from any kind of cultural or family activity you can think of. Museums, art galleries, Science centers, the zoo, theme and water park, Public Markets, Broadway productions, ballet, orchestras, seasonal festivals, restaurants, nightclubs, Rochester has it all.

A two hour drive West to the Canadian border are the falls, casinos and outlet shopping centers.
An hours drive East and South to casinos, shopping outlets, lakes, ski Mountains. If you live here and can't find anything to do, you're not looking. Try to find half these activities in most cities in North or South Carolina, you will be disappointed.

My only two gripes about Rochester and upstate NY in general are of course, the high real estate taxes and the long winters. I enjoy the perks from the taxes I pay-the excellent schools that don't need PTA's to fund every single extra curricular activity as they do in the South. The huge and amazing library and community center which offer many free activities and programs for families and seniors.
The winters? Nothing we can do about those and they stink, I will admit.
Our plan upon retirement is to escape for two months of the worst of it every year. January 1st-March 1st should just about do it.

I agree...i love Greece, i'm a born and bred greecer. Moved away to NC for a while, and then when we decided to return to Rochester, considered the more "posh" places like Brighton, Webster, Penfield, Henrietta; but ended up in North Greece and love it. It is home. I also believe that the above poster who was doing the most "greece bashing" is just some high school kid so I wouldn't let what he/she says get to me

Also how much income is needed for a family of three. As well as anything you may think would be helpful to know. I look forward to your replies. Thanx

Irondequoit is a nice town, I am an Irondequoit HS grad. Race relations are not that great. Irondequoit has seen an influx of Blacks and Hispanics from the city and many of the Whites are not too happy about it. Check out the area near Chapel Hill/Winona Blvd. Nice homes quiet streets and close to a bus line if you like acess to public transportation.

Good ole Briarwood, Roy Scott and I were the only 2 people on color in the school. But times have changed.

Actually I like Greece, it's a nice place. I was merely sharing what some friends told me a few years back about their experiences at various Greece high schools.

I honestly don't think you can go wrong with any suburb in Rochester. Compared to my time in Buffalo, Rochester's suburbs are miles ahead.

That's for sure. While I think the city of Buffalo is in slightly better shape than the city of Rochester in some ways; there's no doubt that Rochester's suburbs are much much nicer than Buffalo's suburbs. Compare Irondequoit to Cheektowaga, Lakawana, West Seneca, etc. and the "Winner" is clear.

I don't even think the city of Buffalo is any further ahead. I mean Elmwood in Buffalo is a great area and I liked going out on Allen. But I still find the neighborhoods in the Park Ave/East/Winton/Browncroft areas to be nicer. They are pretty similar for the most part. Both have some awful areas and some really great areas.

Isn't most of that in the East Irondequoit area? Eastridge is about 18% Black and 10% Hispanic in terms of student population.

I lived in Greece as a young child. Moved to Irondequoit (west) and thought that I had died and gone to heaven when I got to dake. All the people were so much more like me. The reason that East Irondequoit high school is ranked higher is because of their baccalaureate program. The school overall is a bit, well, it doesn't give students as much freedom as west irondequoit and west irondequoit encourages free thinking and a love of learning to a higher extent in my observations.
