Aldi and Lidl are rivals in the limited assortment/discount grocery segment, especially across Europe.

Both chains have the same business modell, but there are some differences. The Lidl stores will have a nice instore bakery. The interior is somewhat more upscale. The produce section is more appealing. You will find more food specialties from Europe. And Lidl stores will most likely have self-checkouts.
In Germany we have basically 5 different "limited assortment / discount chains". I regularly shop at 4 of them. The staples are of course the same, but otherwise every chain has a slightly different product range.

The Kroger Marketplace brings a lot of traffic. That's surely the reason why Lidl will open a store at this location (the same reason why Aldi prefers to open a store near a Walmart Supercenter). Most likely that the Kroger Marketplace will lose some sales through the new competitor. But in the long run the Kroger Marketplace could also benefit from the Lidl store, because the Lidl store will bring even more customers to this place.

What I don't understand, why so many people still think it's a good idea to invest into Kroger stocks. Kroger is surely a great company, but the competition in the grocery retail industry will become a lot fiercer through the entrance of Lidl and the expansion of already well established grocer into new markets.

The chain is smart to invest in that part of town. I have often wondered why 460 does not have many more food shopping,
restaurant chain options there. That particular Kroger always attracts tons of shoppers and having a Lidl next door is icing on the cake.

Successful grocery participants, including Kroger, will remain attractive to stockholders. Struggling grocery participants will lose interest.

I wonder if supermarket Publix will consider the trade area when it comes to the Roanoke area.

I know the Roanoke market could support a non discount oriented grocery store. We are so saturated with discount chain stores
it is beyond understanding. The problem here is topography as there is little flat land, unlike NC, to build new shopping centers
and new chain restaurants. When Fresh Market came here it was quickly the top store in that chain. Today it is very hard to shop
there as it is way too crowded! 460 is not as hilly so that area would be a good start. But it is doubtful Publix will even consider
this market anyway!

Doubting Publix will enter the Roanoke area is delusional. Publix is coming.
