Up until recently I assumed this was just a nickname until I saw the street sign. Could they not find some obscure figure to name the street after?

With all the re-naming and controversy, I've always thought that they should have re-named Boulevard "Maynard Jackson Boulevard" and left the airport alone. Plus, a Maynard Jackson Boulevard passes close to Maynard Jackson High School (also appropriately re-named). Maynard Jackson's ancestors (John Wesley Dobbs, etc) also established themselves in the Old Fourth Ward Area near and around Boulevard.

I can't answer your question, but at least there's only one Boulevard now. Hosea L. Williams Drive, which runs perpendicular to Boulevard, used to be named Boulevard Avenue. It was renamed just before Mr. Williams' death in 2000.

BWAH! I absolutely refuse to believe that! What is up with this town and naming streets? And on a similar topics could someone tell me why Beaver Ruin is called Beaver Ruin? What exactly did the beavers ruin?

Kirkwood was a separate town until annexed in 1921. The main street through the town as named Boulevard Drive. 911 never forced cities and counties to change street names to keep the confusion at a minimum.

Boulevard has to be Atlanta's most interesting street alignment. Few people driving on Lenox Road in Buckhead probably realize that if they follow it far enough to the south, they'll end up at the Atlanta Federal Penitentiary, after some very bizarre twists and turns. Lenox Rd > Cheshire Bridge > Monroe > Boulevard.

Talk about "Boulevard of Broken Dreams!" It somehow seems fitting, though.

Don't forget about "The By Way"!

Another Atlanta street name gem.
