Yes (plus this was on campus). They thought the last incident was isolated, but it wasn't.

There was a murder/suicide when I went there in the 80s (he was a disgruntled employee and may have been looking to do more shooting, but IIRC, he got stopped at the entrance to the Vet. bldg, but one professor was shot and died from that wound), so it's not like there hasn't ever been violence there in the past, but 4/16 changed everything.

Officer Crouse had 5 children and stepchildren. There is a fund in his name at the National Bank of Blacksburg.

Ironically, there was a "pro gun" demonstration just last week at the VT campus promoting students to carry guns to class. Wow, I am so glad I am way
past out of college. What a weird environment to study, not knowing who is going to be shot next?

You have to realize though that this is the way the world is today and unfortunalty anything can happen anywhere.. the mall, work, school and even your own home. There comes a point in life where you cannot think about that constantly. You just have to roll with it and not fear the unkown; life is too short for that.
