I have to go from Richmond to NYC on a Wed. night. Would be leaving Richmond around 5 pm.

Should I spend a little extra and take the train or drive? How would DC traffic be north around 7 pm or so? Better to leave at 6 and hit DC at 8?

The money you save by driving will quickly be eaten up by all the money you'll spend on parking (assuming you'll be in the City and not just in the general NYC area).

Go Amtrak.

Yea, very true. I figured I'd save, after tolls and parking, only about $20.

I'm more wondering if I can drive from Richmond to NYC without getting stuck in traffic in DC, but it seems unlikely. The trains appear to be fairly on time from Richmond to NYC too (leave a little late but make it up between DC and NYC).

Id say train , there doing so much construction on 95 in MD , PA , NJ etc and on the various feeder highways that traffic is a mess all the time. You'll save between 2-5hrs using the train. For Lower Manhattan / Jersey City switch at Newark Penn station and use the PATH line. For Midtown and points North and Long Island use Penn station. You might find it easier to go and catch a train form DC union station , trains DC & north run every 20-35 mins & 24/7. You'll still save 2-3 hrs using the DC optional. If you don't take the train be prepared for tons of traffic , its starting to get really bad up here. A new project starts every week.

Why dont you take the 6:30pm flight on Jetblue? You'd be at JFK by 8:00pm. $150

Driving. Leave Richmond after 6:00pm. Without accidents you'd be in NYC by 2:00am at the latest. Figure gas and tolls $80.

Amtrak: It leaves around 6:00pm arrives at Penn station around 2:00am. $80.

Theres a 10:29am train that leaves Main Street and arrives @ NY Penn at 5pm. If you drive and park at DC Union which i know can be a pain , you get more options. Like i said before the Traffic is starting to get real bad up here with all the new projects there starting each week. Flying , into a NYC airport is terrible. JFK is the worst of the 3 , then Newark and LGA. Although he said 5pm , hes better off doing the early morning train , since CSX tends to delay in the afternoon.

Completely incorrect. I fly into JFK 2-3 times a week with JetBlue. JFK is the best of the three. I'm off the plane and into a Dial7 limo within 10 minutes and at my NYC destination with 30-40 minutes.

I would definitely drive. Going into DC at about 7pm is a piece of cake because you would be going against the grain. You might encounter some traffic between Washington and Baltimore but at that hour it won't be that bad. You will probably get some Richmond traffic on the interstate during rush hour but it should be moving pretty good. If you take Amtrak you will end up at Penn Station and will have to take a cab or subway to get to your destination. With a car, you can drive where you need to go. If you are staying in a hotel, I would drive to the Meadowlands near Giants stadium where you can get an inexpensive motel. You can take a bus into the city and be in downtown in 30 minutes. You would avoid going into Staten Island and miss the huge toll on the Verrazano Bridge. I would take Amtrak or fly if I was going on Friday evening because you would run into weekenders traveling somewhere for the weekend and it would be slow going. If you drive be safe and have a great time.

WTOP 103.5 fm has timely traffic updates which are very helpful. It is an all news all the time station. You can also get it on AM but I do not remember the frequency. You can pick them up North of Fredericksburg.
