Last night at about 9:00 pm there was a shots fired incident at Massachusetts Avenue & Broad Street in South Providence (Washington Park neighborhood).
"Susie Paquin, who lives in the area, tells 12 News she refuses to work at night because of all the violence. “There’s always something … especially on this street,” she said Wednesday. “It’s the busiest street and it was a long weekend. Everyone was having fun.” “There’s always something happening, you just don’t know when,” Paquin continued. “There was a shooting not too long ago over there. There’s a shooting down the street, something happened on Elmwood. Every day something happens.”"
Wow. I haven't been up there in ages but in 1979 an old high school friend and myself rented a place on Viola St. I just looked it up on Google Maps and it's only a few streets away. I felt perfectly safe in those days walking around. I had an old Italian landlord who lived on the first floor and he would let us know if he felt we had any 'undesirable' guests. There were a lot of people like him around the area in those days, looking out for their property and the neighborhood. At the time we thought he was just an old busybody but as I'm older now (a lot!) I see his reasoning.
How did he judge on sight whether your guests were undesirable or not?
And as noted in the article, this isn't the first this year for the Revel Lounge. A man was shot and killed outside of there this past August. Chances are, it will be back up and running in a couple of weeks and the cycle will repeat itself.
I'm not sure if the "majority" of shootings were at bars, but a lot of the violent crime/gang violence in Providence has long revolved around the bar/club scene.
"According to witnesses, a fight broke out by the DJ booth in the club, when a man started shooting.
Police say that upon arrival, they found the club in total disarray, with blood on the floor, broken bottles and furniture, and shoes left behind.
After evacuating the club, police found multiple gunshot victims — including one that is in critical condition as of Sunday morning.
One male had a gunshot wound to his shoulder; another male had multiple gunshot wounds to his those (???), and female sustained a gunshot wound to the leg.
Police said that when they responded to Rhode Island Hospital, they also encountered a female victim with lacerations to her back incurred while trying to flee the club."
