I notice that my super and his son have door sweeps on bottom of their apartment doors obviously to deter roaches from getting out thru the doors into others apts. A few months ago the super mentioned i should get one but at the time his accent was a bit hard to understand and i didn't really know what he was talking about. But when i slid the rent payment under his door it occurred to me he has a door sweeper under his door with about a 5 inch width space for tenants to slide the rent payment envelopes in

Today i went to my local housewares store. they had plenty to choose from but it turned out i may have to install mine with screws, according to the staff who was rushed and not totally listening to me. i was looking at rubber ones that i could cut to size (14" and 15 " each) the total width of the door is 33.5 " minus 4.5 " for someone to slide an envelope in

i've never installed these before. does anyone know a universal brand i could get for a door that is 33.5 " wide and with a 2" bottom to fit a rubber sweeper on?

i think it's a good idea but i want it to be an easy job

Ask the super to install one on your door. If needed, tell him you will pay for the door sweep. Explain you don't know what to buy and want to make sure it is right. I don't think you need to make a space in the sweep if you do not as a rule receive envelopes under the door.
The usual reason for a door sweep is to keep out drafts. It's more energy efficient. I seriously doubt the main purpose of a sweep is to deter roaches.

Default how much $$ would be

reasonable to have them put it on? the store i was in had door sweeps ranging from $3- to about $20

shane-on the package of these sweeps they said they can be used to avoid drafts as well as deter insects. reason why he suggested it is the lady across the hall claimed that roaches came out of my apt into hers. in a sense it's true because my fridge is right near the door and no matter how much i clean roaches are always under the fridge area. on the other hand, the traps my neighbor put outside her apt door do not have any roaches in them and she has had them for 2 months

i believe the landlord and their son have the sweeps for the same reason

If you're going to leave a big gap in the sweep, what is the purpose of putting one on?
Roachs and drafts won't honor a "mail only" designation.
