PAS36BH-Uh, there's quite a bit of difference between CC and Minden/G'ville. For example, CC is well known for having a gang problem, but Douglas is far from having the same problem. Yes, gangs can be found everywhere, but you see far far less of it in Minden/G'ville and it affects the community to a much smaller degree.

As for drugs, I didn't mention it in particular but I know it's everywhere. All I know is that the rate is far less in Douglas County than up in Carson City/County. I'm also sure that it walks hand-in'hand with the difference in gang activity.

When you walk the streets in the two areas, you'll also see quite a bit of difference between the two areas. In CC you'll see the the long-term motels on the street with the people (aka bums) loitering outside all day long or walking back and forth between the motels and the liquor store. You don't have the same thing in Minden/G'ville.

You'll also find areas in CC where it wouldn't be safe to be out at night. Graffitti is evident marking territories and it's likely that anyone walking the streets is either asking to be a victim or is up to no good. It's quite clear. However, I can't think of any similar areas in the greater Minden/G'ville region. I would feel comfortable on most any street in Minden or G'ville.

So, if you're suggesting that there is no difference between CC and Douglas County towns in terms of drug, gang activity and/or safety, I think I will have to disagree with you. I know that there is quite a bit of difference between the two areas and I would gladly choose Douglas County over Carson City/County anytime.

Looking for maintenance free, 2000 sq ft or less 3 br home in quiet neighborhood, but not real far from all the conveniences.

I am looking for suggestions in what area to look in. We have driven thru Reno only and plan on spending some time (maybe a year) visiting different places to decide where to live.

Also we are trying to keep it under $300,000

Thanks in advance

I have lived in the Reno-Tahoe area for over 30 years, with the last 18 in Reno. We own a home in Reno + own rentals in Reno and Minden + I lived in Minden for 7 years.

All of the previous posters make good points, but if you want to live
"not real far from all the conveniences," Reno would be much better for you then Minden. There's just not enough to do in Minden, and not enough good shops or restaurants, whether you are are 20 or 60.

Home prices have crashed in Northern Nevada since late 2005 (more so then the rest of the county), so you will have absolutely no trouble finding a nice 2000 sqaure foot home for 300,000.

Some nice, quiet and safe areas with newer, "low maintenance" homes, would include the Southwest, South Suburban and Spanish Springs. (We live in the Old Southwest, which is a fanstastic place to live , but all the homes are older, so it probably does not meet your "low maintenance" criteria. )

For a medium-sized city Reno has great restaurants and stores --- Minden and Carson City do not.

Property taxes are low in Northern Nevada (relative to most of US) and there is no income tax.

Good luck, tg9999

curious about the coast of water in the reno area; looking at the list of homes for sale i noticed lots of nice homes that don't have grass; is water a problem in reno; is it expensive? also is it difficult to find a few acres near town that has a well vice public water. i lived in billings and it was rare to find acreage with a well becasue there were problelms with digging wells and finding good potable water so people had to have cistrerns.

Thumbs up thanks for the suggestions

I am very interested in retiring in the Reno/Sparks area next year and appreciate all the info on this forum. I only want to move once so want to be sure I find the right place. Old saying: act in haste, repent at your leisure. That is what I did, bought a condo in a place that was for the most part ok at the time, but has steadily gone downhill, full of subsidized renters, inconsiderate neighbors, etc. So I am looking forward to moving and hope to be happy in my next place. I will continue to check in on this board.

I live in Reno because my wife and I are both retired military and we get care at the VA hospital in Reno. If not for that, I think we would have relocated in Carson City. Reno has gotten too big and we are having big city problems with gangs and shootings.

Default Old Town Minden, Nevada

While I agree with some of what has been said about Minden, in my opinion county road is most residential with only a few businesses at either end and no businesses in between. The original poster was looking for something convenient I believe this fits the bill also for transport to california with Hwy 395, Hwy 88, Hwy 50 and Hwy 80 (further) within driving distance. Centrally located between Lake Tahoe, Carson City and Reno. Carson Valley medical center and Veterans Admin are close too.

I believe (only my opinion) douglas county has certain advantages over Reno "1 hr driving" and Carson City "30 min driving". I am not saying Reno and Carson City are bad places only that in northern nevada Minden is probably best.

The new owners of the Carson Valley Inn have invested a lot of money in their business. The Beverly Hillbillies casino (Max Baer) should also be coming in the future as well.

Default Someone is breaking ground near the Washoe SmokeShop

I figured probably Max Baer asked the logical question and was told by the people in the tribal smoke shop it would be a casino. An Indian casino? They said no the tribes are not allowed to build casino's in Nevada. I don't know if they are correct or not but would figure they should know. So I don't know who is building or what they are building there.
