America was NOT based on Christianity, but was founded by people trying to escape religious persecution by the fundamentalists of their day.
There is evidence both ways. Some founding fathers wanted a nation based on Christianity and others didn't want to be so explicit about it. Whether or not it was or not, most people of that era took Christianity very seriously and had no problems with children learning the Bible for instance in schools. It wasn't until the 1960s did we start to see a push in the other direction. Today, history is being rewritten to push an atheist point of view.

I think you are wrong about atheists pushing anything...They simply do not believe in any gods, but really most don't have a problem with any individuals belief. The problem begins when fundamentalist values influence laws and politics as they do to a certain extent now. The "push" is to keep religion out of these areas. Some would have us return to the dark ages.
Learning the bible in schools makes no sense. It is not history or anything to do with facts, but a book filled with unproven contradictions. If a parent wants his child to know the bible, then the parent should teach it.
I am from the UK and recently came to live in America, the Mid-West to be exact. I was a Jehovah's Witness for 40 years, but am now agnostic.... which is an integral part of my story as to why I came to the US.
So many times after relating my story, the first question has been, 'Which Church do you go to now? Would you like to come to ours?' The one or two times I have said I am an agnostic, I get incredulous stares like I have suddenly grown 2 heads. It's like people in this area cannot conceive that a person might not believe in the Christian God. I dont think the reactions would have been very pretty if I had said I was an atheist!
So it seems it depends on where you live in this country as to how socially acceptable it is to profess agnosticism or atheism. Here in Missouri/Kansas you kind of feel like you have to keep it in the closet. The opposite of how it was in good old England!
PS. There are many things I DO like about living here though.
The irony being that here in the UK we do have a state religion.

I hope the wise words of swami vivekananda help you.
Science has proved to me that physical individuality is a delusion, that really my body is one little continuously changing body in an unbroken ocean of matter; and Advaita (unity) is the necessary conclusion with my other counterpart, soul.
Science is nothing but the finding of unity. As soon as science would reach perfect unity, it would stop from further progress, because it would reach the goal. Thus Chemistry could not progress farther when it would discover one element out of which all other could be made. Physics would stop when it would be able to fulfill its services in discovering one energy of which all others are but manifestations, and the science of religion become perfect when it would discover Him who is the one life in a universe of death, Him who is the constant basis of an ever-changing world. One who is the only Soul of which all souls are but delusive manifestations. Thus is it, through multiplicity and duality, that the ultimate unity is reached. Religion can go no farther. This is the goal of all science.
All science is bound to come to this conclusion in the long run. Manifestation, and not creation, is the word of science today, and the Hindu is only glad that what he has been cherishing in his bosom for ages is going to be taught in more forcible language, and with further light from the latest conclusions of science.

You sound like a potential Buddhist. Check it out.
For someone who is brand new to the forums and jumps right into a combative post like this one, I think you should be first to prove that what you're saying to be true. What you've said is merely your opinion. You don't understand God (or Christianity) so you call Him a myth. I don't understand algebra but I don't call it a myth.
Coming into a Christian Forum to knock Christianity is not very good form. It's like going into someone's home, just because the door was open, and starting to criticize the house and the family. Meanwhile they just stare at you wondering, "Who are you and why are you in our house if you don't like it?"
This is not a Christian forum. It's the Religion and Philosophy forum.
There's a special forum for Christians ... all for you very own.
Acecombat, if you want to check out Buddhism, a very basic and wonderful book to read is A Path With Heart by Jack Kornfield. Easy to read and quite enjoyable.
I think there is a god, IMHO there is too much coincidence for their not to be one.
But that does not mean god cares about us nor does it mean there is an afterlife.
To me its funny how every major religion has an afterlife, its like the carrot on the end of the stick that lures us into religion in the first place. What if the bible promissed no afterlife? What if the bible specificaly said there wasent one? What if Jesus himself said that when you die, you simply cease to exist? How many christians do you think there would be?
I dont think there would be any. I think greed is a major part of our world, religions included, and people wont join a religion unless there is something in it for them.
Religion = gullible. If the Christians have it right, that means many others around the world have it wrong, meaning they are just gullible idiots who have wasted their life believing in something that does not exist. They were brainwashed by others who were brainwashed before them, and the cycle continues. And you cant talk any sence to them, cause they are too far gone into the religion, they will say god speaks to them and they feel gods presence and give you 20 reasons why their religion is the corerct one and say that you just have to have faith.
I am not gonna be one of the gullible masses who gets brainwashed and wastes his life, if there is a god or a jesus who actually cares about me, he has the power to convince me with some real proof if he/she wants to, if not, I guess I was not important enough.
