It doesn't matter if the next Pope is American or African. Dolan and Turkson are both hardliners. The world will freak out and then discover that there's really no change at all.

I've been following the Popeful Hopefuls on TV. I hope the Quebec guy doesn't get in.

No great loss there. If the Catholic Church supported those things, and women clergy, I would strongly consider joining.

Are there any benefits of having a Pope from one's country or is it just for National pride?

The Pope still has major sway in a lot of places, especially Latin America and certain communities of Europe. He also is a big "mediator" when it comes to world conflicts like Israel and Palestine. John Paul II's support of the Solidarity Movement in his native Poland was instrumental in giving it the influence it needed to usurp Communist rule. So a Pope could definitely be a major advocate on behalf of the nation he represents.

This influence is precisely why there has never been an American Pope, and why no one should get their hopes up that there will be one now. The United States is already viewed as too powerful, and having an American as Pope will negatively affect his "peacemaking" power, especially in the Middle East.

Why ?

Aren't there enough religions that meet your liberal criteria already ?

Many people are saying a Quebec pope will see the resurgence of religion in Quebec. That's the last thing most people here want. We got rid of it for a reason, during the Quiet Revolution. No point in going backwards.

the best choice for the vatican would be an african pope

1. thats where a sizeable percentage of new recruits come from

2. it would put an abrupt end to western liberal criticism of the pope

europe is a post religous continent , their is nothing to be gained by electing a european pope , wont be an an american however , you couldnt have a pope from a country where catholics are a minority

The best choice for the Vaticane would be a Brazilian pope.. The single largest Catholic country is Brazil.
Though for the future of this corporation, probably best to get someone a bit more modern and with the times than the prior conservatives.

How do explain the last pope coming from Germany then? Catholicism is not the majority in Germany.. its almost equal Catholic/Protestant.
