Do the very wealthy like millionaries and billionaires go to church? It seems that the more wealth people attain the less religious they become.

I can think of a few examples of Wealthy families that were/are noted Church supporters and church Goers

The Kennedys

The Carters (Jimmy Carters family)

Sam Walton's Family (founder of Wal-Mart)

Danny Thomas Family

The Romney's are fairly devote, and as we all know from the recent election, that family's pretty well to do.

But anecdotal evidence really means nothing, of course there are some religious rich people. What would mean something would be a scientific survey of the 1% to see how religious observance differs amongst that population compared to other people who live in their communities (like, say, are rich people in NYC more or less religious than the average NYC resident)

Church provides social benefits and social cover / respectability. There are many motivations for participating in religious ritual, other than spiritual beliefs.

I would hope so, they have a lot to ask forgiveness for. Keeping all that money when so many are ill and poor. Living beyond their means, stepping on the backs of all those workers to get more of the bottom line. I would sure hope they have their own personal confessional at church. I'm sure they need it if they plan on going to that kingdom in the sky. Lol
I'm surprised God let's Sam Walton go to church, I'd think he'd been struck by lightning on the way in by now.

Well Sam died a good many years ago. His dream for Wal-Mart was considerably different from what it now is.

Some things he always wanted in his stores was to only sell American made products. Only sell at the lowest price possible, never sell what he would not use himself or have his family use. I lived in Bentonville before he died, never met him personally but he was quite a guy. always drove around in his old pick-up. Friendly to everybody. His family still lives there. But, the Waltons no longer have much connection with Wal-Mart.

I was an Atheist at the time and did not attend church. but do know the Waltons were the biggest supporters of the church they attended.

Interesting, I was sort of joking around but I'm now curious if he did anything to stop the mutilation of his dream? Seeing his name is attached and he seemed to have the right idea, it now makes me curious. I'll have to look into it. I'd still drive my VW Bug if I were to come into money. The richer I become the more I just love my VW. Thanks Woodrow.

Just for the record, I don't think being rich has anything to do with church. Most people I know who attend a church do so for other reasons than to emulate the life of Jesus or their God's vision. Most I know are Jewish as well, it's ok to be rich if you are Jewish. lol
Wife, mother, the "right" thing to do, etc. I don't think the rich are an exception to that. Maybe they are a little more grateful for the finer things in life money can buy like health and education and if they believe God gave them that life they are probably pretty happy about it.

June suspects it is an unknown demographic dynamic, except to say that what is ingrained in a person probably does not change due to socio-economic circumstances.

Of course they do. Wealth have nothing to do with attending church or not.

At my church, nearly all of them are millionaires (own mansions, drive expensive cars, etc.)
