The only way that this could truely be "acceptable" if the wife was either bi-sexual and that she would would have some hand in the game for it to work. That being said she would not just be the husband's mistress but her as well.

There have been societies where exactly this was done, and they were happy and functional - this WAS normal for them. Along came westerners, who imposed their ideas of marriage on them, and they subsequently became much less happy and functional with all the ills of western "culture". It was reported that the men and women were happier, and had much more sex until a much later age than westerners. That no longer happened once western ways were imposed on them.

As for me, I get to choose my own, but my wife can veto a choice.
