Let's see. I was born in the USSR, in the Russian Federation, in West Siberia. I went to Russian kindergarten, played with my Russian playmates in the yard of the apartment complex, went through the Russian elementary school, Russian middle school and Russian high school, scored highest in Russian language among other subjects upon graduation. Wrote compositions on Leo Tolstoy, Theodor Dostoyevskiy, Aleksandr Pushkin, naturally, in Russian. Then the university, with my "red" high school diploma, I was admitted only with 2 exams out of 4 one of which was Russian Language and Literature. After graduation from the university, joined the Soviet Army as an officer, in the rank of a lieutenant, was discharged few years after in a rank of a captain. Does this qualify me as a native Russian speaker?

BTW. Someone who is really fluent in Russian would be able to tell that I am native speaker just by looking at my nickname here. That's an inside joke every native knows.

OP, if you want to go over, contact a hostel. They can invite you, register your passport, and then you can go on your "marry" way. This is how I went over on my last trip. I stayed with friends, but you will actually need that hostel. Still, if you don't know anyone, are you capable of figuring out what to do on your own?

I don't really care that you want a Russian wife. But, do be aware that if you don't speak the language and they don't speak English or Swedish well, any relationship you have with them is HIGHLY suspect. Also, it's not necessarily so easy to meet nice people just randomly anymore. Foreigners really aren't that unusual or interesting, so anyone who takes a keen interest in you is either really provincial or wants something from you.

Forgive me if this isn't you, but it is true for many American men. If you have it in the back of your mind that Russian women will be these super submissive wives, forget it. As someone else said, once they notice how life is for others, then they'll rightfully want that, too. Russian women are not stupid. They may have grown up with machismo all around them, but it doesn't mean they like it.

You say you're 24, so you're young and presumably not too far into a career. Can you take leave from whatever you're doing and head over as a student?

If not, well, it's kinda weird. Most men and women don't go shopping for a wife or husband as if they're picking out a new car or kitchen tile. Why do you want a Russian wife, and not simply a wife? Is there something about Russian women that makes you feel they'd be a better match for you than a woman from any other country?

"Red flags" is just a way of saying "warning signs that something is wrong, or off" -- in this case, with you. Because yes, your topic is a little unusual.

Maybe he wants a good borscht?

Isn't borscht technically Ukrainian?

Still, it is really good there. I miss it. Maybe my husband would let me bring home a Russian or Ukrainian wife.

As a Russian, I find that hilarious. It's true when they say ignorance is bliss. When you don't know the language or the culture, it's quite easy to imagine people are "beautiful inside and out".

Zaichik? I don't know, maybe it's because I emigrated at 12, but I'm not sure I get it.
