You don't mention what state you live in. Do you live in CA now in a rental? That's what I'm sensing, but I'm not sure. I have lived in both CA and TX (I currently have homes in both AK and TX but live most of the time in TX). I greatly prefer TX for several reasons, but school system sure isn't one of them. Our school system is generally quite poor, although it varies a lot from one district to another. Private school tuition is much more reasonable than CA if you want to go that route, and we also offer an innovative charter school system as well as a lot of assistance for parents who want to home school their kids.
The cost of living is low, we do not have a state income tax, though the state sales tax is rather high (though strangely enough, it is still lower than CA's, and CA also has a state income tax, I think). The weather varies throughout the state, as does CA. Dallas is generally very hot throughout most of the year with quite a bit of humidity, however, it is also very sunny so that makes it a nice place if you enjoy warm weather.
TX generally has an abundance of jobs. We have never been hit as hard by recessions as the rest of the country due to the state being a mecca for jobs in the oil, gas, engineering, healthcare, aviation, education, and science fields.
