We thought for a second a plane was going to crash into our apartment building today. These guys were loud and close. Anyone know what the fighter jets were doing in this area today?(thought it would be a weird place for a training mission). We are not in the normal flight path of the airport. Just wondering if there was some weekend event today where they had the jets. Thanks!

I saw two pairs over NW Raleigh this afternoon. Pretty impressive site, quiet operation is certainly not a design goal.

Could they be from the national guard facility near there?

I wondered the same too with that loud, low, fast, roar.

Not National Guard but Navy Flyovers for home game days at Univ of North Carolina vs Univ of Miami -- Fly Over Kenan Stadium, Chapel Hill and Military Appreciation Day and Duke vs. Georgia Tech Football -- Fly Over Wallace Wade Stadium, Durham.

Always a thrill!

They were actually supposed to be F/A 18 Hornets....marine flyers.

I heard them today, but by the time I got outside, they were behind the trees...so I couldn't be sure exactly what they were.

I used to design the avionics systems for the F-16. I worked at Carswell Airforce base in Fort Worth TX and enjoyed seeing these planes every day. We had test pilots working there and they would take the jets out every once in a while for some fun. Half of the office staff would go out into the parking lot and watch them show off. Our team had 1 person who was allowed to ride with them in the 2 seater version. Alas, I didn't stay in the group long enough to build up the seniority to get that benefit.

We saw them fly over our house in the Cary area near Morrisville. They were screaming! Reminds of the time we visited Norfolk, VA and just happened to drive near the naval air base there. Fighter jets were practicing take-offs and landings, and it looked like they were just doing big loop arounds after take off. We were one of about 6 cars that pulled off the side of the road to watch. Our young son was thrilled to see the jets in action - very Top Gun looking action.
