The amount above is the combined total spent on legal fees to fight the case. The ruling stated that the town must pay Mr. Bowden's legal fee's: I recall reading somewhere that he was seeking 1 cent in damages.

"If the town doesn't appeal, its sign rules would remain largely intact."

Great job guy. Way to waste everyones time and tax dollars for your own pride, our town will now have to charge us to make up for the half a million bucks you blew, all so you can paint a stupid sign on your house as a result of your own greed.

By the way, nice tacky Plymouth prowler in your carport, hope that wasn't our tax dollars too.

Jerk.

Actually I don't think he was greedy at all or he would have asked for compensation much greater than 1 dollar haha The fees are the lawyers fees which were caused by the town itself.

The town having to pay his legal fees is pretty common when you lose a case I think.

If you seriously consider him greedy when he only asked for 1 dollar in compensation i would hate to hear what you thought if he had actually asked for the cost of his house haha

1 dollar doesnt even go far enough to put much gas in that prowler does it?

I like that Plymouth Prowler. Not tacky at all. A step out of the norm. I don't think he set out to make a sign. Cary didn't like it so they had to find some ordinance to fine him or control him with. So they used the sign ordinance. In reality it is his expression, not a sign. Cary was not smart on this on. They tried to play hard ball when it really wasn't needed. The city should have been smart enough (or had people smart enough) to know that it would cost more in the long run. I am sure they knew that. It wasn't about money for Cary, it was more of a control issue. The town of Cary deserves what they got in this one. Sucks to be a resident there, as Cary could just increase taxes or just find it in their budget and reduce things like bonuses or uneeded line items.

Your dislike should be more directed at Cary and not by talking bad or trying to belittle the guy. Some people just accept that the government tells them what and what not to do in everything and to take it and like it. This guy is clearly felt wronged by Cary and decided to express it in a way to get the most attention. I would bet that if he did it verbally or protested Cary would still have searched for a way to stop him.

Can't say that I've followed every detail here, but I would think the town of Cary had ample time to settle/discuss before a Court ruling.
Seems like Cary wanted a ruling and they got one. Not the one they wanted, but that's how it falls sometimes.
Not sure I'd blame the citizen, even if he has a Prowler :-)

Considering that the only resolution he was willing to accept prior to the judgment was the town's purchase of his home so that he could buy his motorhome, they don't seem to be out a whole lot more money than if they'd gone that route.

Can you imagine if the sign ordinance was struck down? Sounds like the courts are giving Cary some time to craft a new one so they aren't caught with their pants down when it gets ruled unconstitutional.

I can see it now, Neon signs up and down Cary Pkwy.

I'm thinking that Cary didn't give him his money because if they had, everyone would want a buyout whenever the town takes part of their property to widen a road.

That's the gist of it.

If you want to talk about greed you may want to look at the attorneys who racked up the legal bills, when anyone with a basic knowledge of the constitution knew this one was going to be a loser...
