Can you tell me more about the interesting assortment of dishes please? I live close to the BBQ Joint but have never been in because I'm not a big fan of barbecue but it might be worth checking out if the other dishes are good.
The menu is on a blackboard every day, so there's no standard fare. It's been a while since I've been there, but I've had an eggplant muffaletta and recall getting some kind of salad with maybe smoked trout or something on it. I wouldn't really consider it a BBQ restaurant in the way that the other local ones are. I'm sure you'd find something on the menu that appeals. You might just give them a call and ask.

They have barbequed catfish that is quite good. They also smoke their own meats. Their pastrami is quite good and I think they have a sandwich called the Redneck Ruben they make with it.
Yes, there is. That would be nationally renowned Allen & Son barbeque on MLK/86 in northern Chapel Hill.
I have eaten BBQ at so many places in the Carolinas from one end to the other and Allen & Sons is probably the second best out of all of them. (Wilburs in Goldsboro is prob No1). Allen & Sons is just fantastic!

They also have various fish & duck dishes. The crabcake sandwhiches frequently get positive reviews. They have a really nice assortment of desserts, too. Several reviews mention that the joint has something of a French bistro/New Orleans feel despite the focus on bbq. You can probably google it to see some reviews and get more specifics on the menu. I should note the menu changes regularly.
I also really like the Q Shack, which someone else mentioned in this thread. It's more of a straight bbq place, and they also do some Texas-style.
I live in Carrboro, love the town, but yes, there is definitely an odd element here that sees veggie BBQ as something legitimate...
Spotted Dog is a particularly weird place - was there with my parents and some friends once (1/2 male, 1/2 female table). By coincidence, all of the men had ordered chili (vegetarian chili, but quite tasty nevertheless). Anyway, when the chili came out and they asked who gets it, I said that the men at the table had ordered chili. The waiter didn't look particularly pleased with my comment (meant to make his life easier) and responded something along the lines of "We're a gender-neutral restaurant."
