Hello all,

I am trying to help my wife, and knowing how helpful the Raleigh forum is I am hoping to get some info and or pointers. My wife will be graduating from her Pediatric residency in June 2009, she is currently in MI completing residency. One of the challenges that I have found with the medical industry is that it seems so much based on who you know, and the resident programs in the area, as potential employers would pick from those first. I have no issues as my employer does have a big campus there, and that would be the best option for me from a job perspective. We are trying to avoid moving to the area and have her then seek an opportunity. We would rather plan and have her already lined up. I never thought obtaining a physician position would be so challenging on a growing area. I have been trying to find any hints or opportunities for her. She is doing the same, but going through her resources at her residency, which all seem to try to promote the local economy there. The majority of potential opportunities are not convenient to the triangle, as they all seem to be located on more rural areas that would put us about 1-2 hours from the triangle.
If anyone has any advice, thoughts, tips on what a soon to be recent pediatric physician could follow that would be greatly appreciated.

We just went through the exact same thing, only my husband has been out of residency for some time. Even with his experience, and some connections in the area, it wasn't easy. He also found lots of opportunities in the "surrounding" area -- which often meant Greensboro, or Wilson. I believe that's just what happens in a growing area -- the growing parts aren't exactly in established neighborhoods. We also found it very difficult to break in because there are so many residents produced by the programs here.

If your wife isn't active in the AAP, I'd suggest getting active and trying to make some connections that way. I'd also recommend she go ahead and start the licensing process for NC now, as it's lengthier than some places, and having a start on that will show folks that she's serious and wiling to move. Try to plumb any friend-of-an-attending connections you can possibly find, and just keep emailing or calling every few weeks. Good luck and I hope it works out for you!

Miril,

Thanks for the response, as I have been on the workforce a lot longer I have suggested some of the things your suggested, networking, but I have learned the medical field is way different. I will pass what you have mentioned, I have targeted a few places , but NC would be our strongest. I will let her know about the licensing issues and get started on that.

Hope your husband found a great place and you guys are enjoy the triangle area.
