I would look at Johnston County if I were moving here now. Wake schools are ok, but nothing fantastic and certainly not as good as the hype. You might not get bused 'across town', but you could very well get reassigned to a lesser school that is farther away from your current one. That is a fact of life here in Wake County.
I am a fan of the year round calendar myself (was denied, even after the appeals process and 2 follow up calls), but it is not for everybody. If you don't like year round at all, then be very careful about where you move. Like somebody said, there are no year round HS, but there are some yr middle schools. One issue that some people have with year round middle schools is that there aren't as many electives. Our assigned traditional calendar school offers French, Spanish, Orchestra and Band but the people one block away from me are assigned to the year round middle school and it offers NO foreign language and no orchestra. If electives are important to you, then be aware of that.
Currently, you have the right to refuse to go to a year round school but that may change soon (its in the courts right now). Also, the traditional calendar option is usually farther away and it's often an unappealing school.
There are a lot of things to think about. You could move here and never get reassigned, or your son could get reassigned to a crappy school 10 miles from home. Even if it doesn't happen to everybody, it still happens and you should be informed and prepared to deal with it if it happens to you.
As rising 7th grader, if they move into a traditional calendar school base school (which there are plenty of) they will not be reassigned due to grandfathering in the 8th grade. Therefore, if you move into a home assigned to a traditional base school as a 7th grader, you will be on traditional calendar through HS.
I'm leaving Southern California for Raleigh. Personally, I would not recommend moving to California at this point. The state is over-regulated and over-taxed, and they're looking to increase both, which will drive even more businesses out. The housing market is completely crazy, and if you want a good paying job and an affordable home, you're going to end up spending at least 2-3 hours/day on the freeway, if not more.
