My husband is searching for a teaching job in NC and is currently staying with my brother (who lives in Apex) while he goes around to schools and interviews. We currently live in Michigan and want to be closer to my brother, who has lived in NC for 10 years now.

My husband just called and said he was offered a job today -- which is so exciting -- but it's at Overhills Middle School in Spring Lake (Harnett county).

It appears to be very close to Fort Bragg, about an hour from Apex, which is farther than I'd like to be from the Triangle. (I will most likely find work in the Triangle since I am in advertising/marketing and need to be closer to the bigger cities.)

Now we are torn. We don't want to jump at the first offer he gets, but also don't want to be too picky this close to the school year. What if he gets no other offers? What if he can't find anything closer?

We were hoping for something in Wake county, and he went around to all the schools, but nothing has happened yet. What should we consider, and what would you do?

One thing to consider when moving to that particular area...getting across the Cape Fear River will make travel to the Triangle longer. You can cross in Lillington, or in Lee County on Avent's Ferry Rd (Hwy 42). Fayetteville is a fairly large city...don't rule out finding work there, or starting your own business....but if you plan to drive to Raleigh/Durham or RTP, be prepared to put some miles on your car.

If its not the area you want, I would say to wait. I know its VERY tempting to jump at the first offer but I am willing to bet that he will get other offers within the next few weeks once it gets closer to the start of school. Principals are always scrambling to hire last-minute.

I would suggest sending emails to principals and dropping off resumes to Johnston County Schools too. There are many teachers in the school where I teach in Johnston County, that live in the Apex/Cary area...and also in Harnett County. They say the commute is not bad at all. Johnston County is always looking for teachers. Just a thought...

Good Luck

Nice golf courses down there....and for what its worth, lots of poverty. The sand hills can be tough.
