I haven't found any and I have a hankering for some really good Mexican food! I'm from Southern California, and so I've been brought up on this cuisine!

I've been to Torreros on Kildaire Farm Road, which I'd heard was good, but it's terrible! Been there at least three times (giving them a few chances). The food is soooooo bland. The beans are positively anemic!

Any suggestions from other Southern Californians so know what I'm talking about? THANKS.

We're from Southern California, and yes, I know EXACTLY what kind of Mexican food you're looking for...

and sadly, we have yet to find one that satisfies what we're craving!

That being said, there are a few decent ones we've tried:

Toreros was the first we ate at, and aside from their "picadillo" pork/beef mix, it is VERY bland like you said.

We like the new restaurant on Lake Pine/64, La Cocina... very fast service, and pretty good food.

Another one that we've tried a few times is Tacos Mexico in Apex... based on the crowd in there, people seem to like it. We've only had it for take-out, and the carne asada was close to some of the food we had back in CA.

Good luck in your hunt... aside from our family, good Mexican food is what we miss most!

I can't stand Torrero's. If you want authentic Mexican head over to Durham - several taquerias were featured in Gourmet magazine last year. I recommend Super Taqueria on Roxboro. We can't link to blogs here so if you search for taqueria, durham and gourmet magazine you can find out more (the article isn't available online).

Here are the places - I haven't been to El Paraiso yet because it's pretty sketchy around there.

Los Comales
2105 N. Roxboro Rd.

El Paraiso
111 S. Alston St.

Super Taqueria
2842 N. Roxboro Rd.

Taqueria Lopez
3438 Hillsborough Rd.

Taqueria La Vaquita
2700 Chapel Hill Road

I like Torrero's...esp. the macho burrito...but then again I'm easy to please.
I also like Vallarta on Capital...far from fine dining...but good to me.
The N&O dude seemed to like it too

I like Torrero's on Harrison, by I-40. I think its the better location. Its a lot busier, too.

If you like different and kind of expensive dining, try Jibarra's. (www.jibarra.net)

or El Rodeo is great for lunch. Its across NC State but its not bogged down with students like you would think.

Haven't been yet, but have heard good things about this new Mexican place called Mez on Page Road in Durham (it's not Cary, but from North Cary where I am it is pretty close): Mez Durham - Contemporary Mexican Restaurant in Durham, NC : Mez Contemporary Mexican

Jibarra is fantastic, but probably different from the Mexican you are thinking of. Still, worth a trip to North Raleigh.

I give Torrero's a thumbs down too. I'm not from California, but my dad is and I have family there and have visited a lot. I figure at least things around here have improved since I was a kid, and we had to buy Old El Paso tortillas in a can.

Have to second that one! Best mexican food I've ever had (although I've only ever lived in NC and Upstate NY). Los Tres Magueyes is pretty good too. They have a larger menu but slower service.

Taco Bell has a nice menu and very fast service....I highly recommend them....

Seriously, I like El Cerro at Millpond Village in Apex/Cary (intersection of Kildaire and TenTen...). Some love it, others don't...good luck
