Wake County still does bus when it suits their preferences. My son is done with the public school system, and there is no change to the school assignments where I live. But I still dislike seeing bus drives of 1hr or more for any reason, especially when it takes 20 minutes to bus pass homes that are assigned to schools closer to where you live.
That's a common complaint on the Thought Exchange, that people are gonna be driving by schools to get to their newly assigned one.
I just watched this week's work session where they go over the first draft. It's absolutely wild the position they put themselves in with transportation in favor of "diversity". So many Raleigh neighborhoods now being reassigned for transportation efficiency to closer schools.
Let this be a hard lesson learned - moving kids around for diversity purposes doesn't work, and will never work. Besides the obvious transportation issues, they should listen to the families. It doesn't matter what race or "socioeconomic status" people are, they want to go to schools that are close to home.
