I have a Costco branded Visa card that pays for my membership every year with the cash back. Used to do the same with a Costco American Express card, until they switched providers. It makes sense that they don't want you to hand your card to your kids, or other people - Costco's main source of revenue is the membership fees.
I also have one of the $25/year BJ's memberships, mostly because they carry some clothes that I like. If I only was going to have one membership, it'd be Costco hands down.
Fair enough. But compared to Costco, their prices are usually higher (with a few exceptions like beef and Snapple), the wine selection is very small, the checkout is slow (at least at the BC location), the in house bakery is pretty awful, and the hotdogs are dreadful.
We keep our BJ's membership because it's convenient for us to get cheaper gas there, and for the beef, the brand/flavor of frozen wings they stock, snapple and ccx a few other specific items they carry that Costco doesn't.
Now - how did you get a $25 membership?
The $25 is a book to get you into auto renewal. I hate auto renewals. I do like their Cooper cheese though.

When I signed up, the lady who processed my application helpfully turned off auto-renewal. She said I could wait until I got another postcard to sign up again.
BJ's has a Veterans/Military discount for membership renewals.
BJ's gasoline is typically 10 cents a gallon less than Costco's when I use their no-fee MasterCard.
BJ's temporarily-closed optical shop is far more expensive than Costco's.
I went to BJ's on Capital yesterday and now they've decided to re-arrange everything. I used to be able to quickly run in and grab what I need because I knew where everything was and get out, but not anymore.
Now you have to hunt for things and can't tell if an item is just out of stock or if they've moved it someplace else. Even the store employees are still trying to learn all the changes. What a dumb idea to re-arrange the entire store during a pandemic.
They did the same rearranging at the BJs in brier creek. I understand your frustrations. Some of the items they couldn't get back in stock appear to have had their tags removed from the shelves too.
Exactly, no mastercard accepted so I need to use cash or debit.
Unless someone has issues managing credit, if you are a Costco member, I don't see why you wouldn't get their Citi Visa. It has no annual fee and some of the best rebates out there, including
4% on gas
3% on travel & restaurants
2% at Costco
1% everything else
I use it, in combination with the 2% Citi DoubleCash and an Amex that give 5% back at grocery stores.
