Hello all,
We are moving from the Midwest and have a son who will be in 3rd grade this fall. We are interested in a few of the private schools in the area. I work from home so location isn't such an issue as we can live pretty much anywhere. My son is very advanced in math, science and robotics. He also is in strings at his school and has been playing cello for two years. He's very social and outgoing. We've looked at Duke School, the Raleigh School and Ravenscroft. Does anyone have any thoughts as to which of these schools really excel in math and science? Music? Spanish? I want him to be challenged but also balanced. I'm particularly interested in grades 3-5. Any thoughtful input would be much appreciated. Thank you.
I know several people at ravenscroft who love it if you can stomach the cost. Maybe check out Cary academy too, I've heard great things. If you want a lower price point we were impressed with lady of Lourdes when we toured it as well as st davids but ultimately went public and have been happy there. However you won't find strings and robotics in public schools here in elementary to the level it sounds like you have there.

Thank you all for your replies. My son has visited all three of these schools and they all seem very good. Hard decision to see which would be best for him based on his interests.

Yes, we have applied to all of these schools and my son is going on his final school visit this week. My concern is whether or not the specific school will challenge him enough in math and science. I just read in one of the schools websites that in the fourth grade math class, the children learn about fractions and decimals. Over Christmas break, I bought a fun book on fractions and decimals for my son and made the learning fun and he is now very competent with fractions and decimals. This is just one example of how he likes to constantly be challenged intellectually. I realize I will have to find music and robotics programs outside of the school at this age which is ok. He also really enjoys art and Spanish so I would like the school to have good and engaging teachers in these subjects also. I narrowed my search down to four schools because I thought they would be the best for my son, but I don't have a good feel for the specifics as mentioned above within each school. Any insight would be much appreciated.

Be careful of pushing your child so hard that he will dislike school.
We never pushed our 2 kids and they went through WCPSS to succeed in college.
Our grandkids are being handled similarly.
Many people feel that pushing kids in school and outside activities may be a defense mechanism for parents who feel guilty for not being with the children as much as they would like.
We made sure Mom was there for our kids by cutting costs to a level that my modest Federal Government salary was enough. It meant living in Mini-City and renting but it was worth it in the long run.
