Hello,
I'm looking at a position at UNC and I wanted to know if anyone can provide insight on public elementary schools that provide good support for my 3rd (will be 4th) grader. He's currently in a full inclusion classroom and does well, the teacher is well trained in special ed and there is an intervention specialist who provides classroom assistance to ALL the kids in the classroom, not just those with extra needs.
I want a smaller school that has a nurturing environment and provides support for kids on the spectrum. Any advice on how to navigate the school system is appreciated. I'm coming from Ohio, so this will be a whole new world for me.
UNC is in Chapel Hill so you will want to post this question on the NC Triangle board. I'm sure you will get some responses as the Chapel Hill area is quite forward thinking. If there is a good school for a child with Aspergers it will be in the Raleigh/Chapel Hill area.I had a child with that (now 23) and 10-15 years ago there was NO help. Things have improved a lot.
There are about 8 UNC schools, so unless one is specific it's always assumed to be Chapel Hill. I really don't know a lot about Wilmington, maybe try the Special Needs forum, a sub-forum under Parenting.
