I don't live in NC so I just wandered into this forum/thread. Am to understand that NC schools use forced bussing of children to meet some so-called "diversity" metric?
If so, how long has that been going on?
Does that mean you can toss out any idea of picking your home due to your impression and academic performance of the local school?
Sorry I couldnt help myself....I've been couped up in my house sick all week...
I am in long island but plan on moving to NC within the next year...
Not all of NC schools are handled this way but Wake County is.....the schools in this county are dealt with county wide rather than town/city wide... so the understanding is that even though you may live 5 minutes from your local school if the need arises they will reassign your child and could bus them a half hour away.....I don't know the exact particulars in how they chose but it has been said to meet social and economic diversity....
Also some schools are traditional and others are year round, so if you do have children in different levels of school, I guess there is always a chance they could fall into different attendance issues....
We were looking into Wake at first but decided to take it off our list since the instability after a big move just wouldnt work for our family, although I have spoken to plenty of families who are perfectly fine with it and it hasnt really effected them to much....

It's all based on the F&R% (Free & Reduced lunch) of each school. They used to bus based on race but switched to socio-economic status because of a Supreme Court ruling in Charlotte back in 2000 (or so) that said no more busing based on race.
Thanks for the responses. That wouldn't be for me, sounds way too unstable and risky for the kids.
On the plus side, at least it's done at the more local level so that the all of people aren't dictated to by the state.
I'm more for local control. I live in NJ and this state is all about strong state control. That's bad.
