We're new to the area, and we finally have some coinciding vacation in the first week of January 2013. Where is a place within driving distance, say, 4 hours or fewer, where we could go for a couple of nights and see something? We like touristy stuff and we're pretty open to seeing all sorts of things -- museums, events, sports... We're just looking to get out of town for a few days and see something new!

Any suggestions?

I would add
  • Charleston,SC (approx 4-4.5 hours)
  • Savannah,GA (5 hours)
Both cities have the historic angle and are nice places to spend 2-4 days in. Plus you'd have to work pretty hard to find a bad restaurant in either city.

Have fun wherever you decide to go.

When people say "the beach" or "the mountains," where do they mean, exactly? Ever since I moved here I've been told that I can get to "the beach" and "the mountains" but I'm not sure where I should be looking!!

Look to the north. The mountains will be on you left. The beach on your right.

Beaches are anything along the NC shoreline - Wilmington/Wrightsville Beach area is the closest to the Triangle at 2-2.5 hours away. The Outer Banks (e.g. Kill Devil Hills, Kitty Hawk, etc) covers 200 miles of the shore and is about a 4 hour drive from the Triangle. Lots of places to see and relax.

Mountains are the Appalachian Mountains/Smokies that cover part of the western part of the state. Asheville is the major city out there although Boone and Blowing Rock are a fun visit as well. You can drive the parts of the Blue Ridge Parkway as well.

Lots of fun and beautiful places within 4-5 hours, as noted above, for a short trip!

I would go to Biltmore Estates in Ashville because it's beautiful in the winter, Seagrove because I love artsy stuff, or Myrtle Beach because there's still lots to do in the winter and no crowds.

Thanks. I can see them on a map. They are also quite large - hundreds and hundreds of miles of both beaches AND mountains. Not sure of the best towns and areas to visit -- hence my question.

Are you trying to be a jerk, or were you going for funny and just missed the mark?
