Go up to Asheville and stay at The Grove Park Inn. Don't forget to book the spa BEFORE you go.

Or, go to Boone and check out the small town of Todd. Great drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway. While in Boone, eat at the Daniel Boone Inn.

I'd save the beach for warm weather but if you are going in that direction, go to Myrtle Beach...plenty of shopping. Hilton Head is gorgeous too.
