I forgot to mention we are Durham Public. But now that I know Wake Co has an one hour rule for bus rides I'm going to call Durham Public Schools and find out if they intend to institute something along these lines. Thxs!
They've said it's not practical. My old boss asked at one point. Her daughter had a 2 hour ride each way.
That is why I am laughing at all the WCPSS bashing about bus rides....they just aren't the only ones that have this issue. Not by a long shot. There is no state law that that limits bus ride length.

Now 2 hours is just crazy!! I knew some places in Eastern Oregon that had those sort of bus rides but we're talking desolate... no area in NC is even closely comparable. But a 4 hour ride in any county near The Triangle is CRAZY!!!
My 2 kindergarteners begain taking the bus last week and LOVE it. I love it too. Idling in the 30 minute carpool lane was ridiculous. Luckily, my kids are only on the bus for about 15 minutes in the morning and afternoon. We're only 1 (hilly) mile away from the school and when they get a little older we'll ride bikes on good weather days.
This thread has been very eye opening for me. I did not realize that some children in Wake and Durham would be required to spend 3 hours round trip on the bus. That is insane. Hopefully this will improve in time.
I hope you didn't think I was "bashing" WCPSS over the bussing just because it's WCPSS. I think it's too long of a bus ride for elementary school students no matter where they go to school. WCPSS actually says on their website that bus rides shoudl be no longer than 45 minutes, but I guess the longer trips are more exentuating circumstances. I do know that if my children's bus rides were more than 1/2 an hour, I'd drive them myself.
I moved out of the WCPSS to Granville County Schools and are much much much happier. My son is thriving like never before. The beauty is he is not overwhelmed by the amount of students, he has not been reassigned, the principal knows everyone student and parents name.
People and businesses just need to stop coming to Wake County.
There are many outlying counties in desperate need of good jobs and well paid residents.
