Need some heartworm preventative medication for dogs. What's the best kind and best place to purchase? I know vets used to charge an arm and a leg. I think Petsmart started carrying them too. Online is cheapest/best?

Typo in title, I meant "heartworm"

I have six dogs, one is a pomeranian 2#'s of fluff, and five miniature Chinese Shar-Pei's. Frontline's med's on eBay are the cheapest possible. It's about 25% of the cost of a vet. It comes in a vial, with a syringe and you draw the dosage by the dogs weight to mL and apply it to their shoulders to butt. Really easy stuff, and a real, real, real $$$ saver for this family.

I know we always try to buy local, and if anyone can find a source for us to buy it at even a halfway reasonable price we're in too!!!

Frontline does not protect against heartworms, only fleas and ticks. You need a prescription from your vet to buy heartworm preventative. You can purchase it from your vet or online.

Ivermectin is sold over-the-counter for use in cattle. If you're comfortable measuring an accurate dose, the same formulation can be used orally on dogs.

We use Nuheart, but it's ordered online. No need to get a prescription.

Generic Heartgard for Dogs - Heartguard Heartworm Medicine | VetShopOnline

It does not protect against flea and tick, which in NC might be kinda a bad idea, but knock on wood 4 years here and no issues with either of them. We were not comfortable giving our dog Frontline due to the horror stories and ingredients.

Ebay looks like a great bet for Frontline, I remember we were paying something like $180/yr for it at one point from my local vet and an office visit to prescribe it.

I used canadavet.com and paid close to the same price as vetshopline for the heart guard.

Purchasing Pet Drugs Online: Buyer Beware

eBay Guides - HOW TO SPOT COUNTERFEIT FRONTLINE FLEA MEDICATION

If you choose to buy online, ebay, etc., you might want to check these links out.

When it comes to my dog, this is one thing I do NOT compromise on. Heart worm medication should be given year round in NC. Flea/tick can be stopped during the colder months however this year we didn't have any real cold days much less months so I did not discontinue it.

I choose to keep my purchases local and as someone mentioned, feed stores do sell Ivermectin otc for cattle so if you KNOW what you are doing, you can potentially go that route.

I have 3 dogs. I already buy/use frontline off of ebay for fleas and ticks. I'm looking for something for heartworms that doesn't require prescription but is just as effective.

evaofnc - do you have a friend at the vet school? can i make a friend of a friend?
