I've seen a lot of police activity around this area, probably due to the new Toll Road opening. I've been seeing 3-4 cars pulled over every night when I go grab dinner (I work the night shift), so if you commute down this road between 6-8pm, be careful and don't speed.
My husband was pulled over here last evening on his way home from Durham...approximately 5:00 pm. Very strange, he was given a written warning that his license plate wasn't fully visible due to the "Southern States" plate frame.
That stretch of 55 from High House all the way out to 54 has been a "hot spot" for years. The wide open 5 lanes plus the low speed limit catch a lot of people not paying attention and wandering up to 55-65mph. I've had several coworkers nabbed on that stretch.
I spoke to someone at DOT about this last week. The new toll road has a committed trooper 24/7. That trooper does a loop that includes part of 540 and the part of 55 going from 540 to Durham. You'll see a lot more tickets in that area now. The local police also seem to have stepped up patrol, but I think that's a short-term bump.
I've seen a TON of people pulled over in general this past week. I usually go 40 to 147 and all week I've seen at least four people pulled over during my commute. Guess that's their way of saying Happy New Year
