My husband has a job transfer to the Raleigh area..
I will finish up the school year here in Boston at the end of June and I'll be moving down as well...

In the mean time I am hoping to find a teaching job in Raleigh for the 2010-2011 school year. (I'm working on finishing up the paper work for the NC certification - I have all the requirements... I have also completed the county online applications)

Is there a time period where counties/school districts hire internally first before opening the job up to the public?
Aside from the county websites, can you recommend any other site for job postings?
Any other wisdom/advice on getting a teaching position in the area would be much appreciated!
Thank you!

Good luck. You'll need it to find a teaching job in Wake County. Especially if you have no experience.

I'd look at the surrounding counties also. Or consider other careers for awhile.

When you find jobs to apply to email the principal directly. Thats about the only advice I can give. I know plenty of friends who graduated with teaching degrees and have yet to get teaching jobs.

What kind of teaching job are you looking for. The Durham School system is having a job fair April 30. They are mostly looking for Science/Math and Technology people. Granville County (north of Wake Forest) is having one May 7.

Wake county has a whole bunch of teachers on terminating contracts and those folks will most likely get hired before outside teachers do. Good luck with your job search.

Very tough market for teachers here. There are existing teachers on terminating contracts and if jobs open up they will probably get hired first. Check private schools too. I seriously think my sister was the last person hired on a continuing contract when she moved here 2 1/2 years ago. Even she thinks her principal made a mistake (in her favor!).

IF any counties start to hire it may well be the end of July or even after school starts the end of August after the dust settles and the schools have an idea of their counts. Check the WORK4NCSCHOOLS site as many schools post there. Also Teaching Jobs US, Education Jobs, Special Education Teacher Jobs might have openings.

There are a few 100 or 1000 in the same boat and most are already here and applying. Wake county is typically slow in processing and completing application files which must be complete before you interview at most Wake schools.

Granville County has a Job fair on May 7th they are looking for people with business, technology, and online instruction experience. I would suggest you attend every job fair within an hours drive. Monitor each counties website and apply everywhere. Good Luck.

You will have to wait till the end of July more than likely. That is when the budget gets finalized and their student counts are pretty close to being finalized so they will know how many teachers they can hire.
