My husband and I recently came up to the triangle area from Florida. We're currently trying to find a good area to move to that works for both of our job locations. My husband works with a company in Raleigh off of I-440 and US-1, and I will be working at Duke Hospital in Durham.
I would very grateful if anyone could recommend some areas that we could look into that would be a nice middle ground for both of us in an effort to avoid terrible commutes.
Just a little bit of background. We're a younger couple, but no children. We'd like to be relatively close to restaurants and areas with things to do.
We've been thinking maybe the Cary area or somewhere in the northern parts of Raleigh, but we weren't sure what the commute to Duke would be from those areas. An insider's perspective would be greatly appreciated!
Cary is full of kids and families. I'd say that's the majority. Ditto North Raleigh. Are you two planning to have kids anytime soon, or were you more looking for safer neighborhoods with mostly adults (or a good blend of family types)?
I would suggest Wakefield community in N Raleigh across from Wake Forest. Close to hubby's work and easy for you to get to Duke hosp. on hwy 98 to Main to Erwin. You could also go on I-540. I've done both routes to downtown durham and it's not a bad commute.
Brier creek or East Durham (Bethesda Nice affordable older house's on large lots ex our house 2000 sq ft ranch plus full basement , detached garage , 1.5 acres $250K) both r in RTP so your husband has a reverse commute and your commute to Duke from there is easy. Alot of conviences nearby and 20-30 minutes from most of the entertainment in the triangle from downtown Raleigh or downtown Durham and all the university's.
Brier Creek sounds like a middle ground if you want to split up the commute time.
But, I have found in the past that depending on the kind of environment you want, often its better to live close to one person's work and make the other person commute. Brier Creek has a lot going on, as they're is a huge shopping center with tons of dining options and a few bars, but it definitely is more of a suburban setting.
If you want something more urban/downtown, you'll have to live either in downtown Durham or Raleigh. Of course, you may not want to live downtown, at which point there are tons of great options like Brier Creek or Morrisville.
FWIW, when I lived in Cary off of N Harrison Ave, my commute to Duke Hospital was 30 minutes (arriving at 7:30 am), and on the way home it was somewhere between 45 minutes and an hour (leaving work at 4:30 or 5:00). This isn't counting the time it took to bus from the hospital to the parking lot.
