I will probably be a minority opinion here and will probably also be bashed for my opinion, but here it goes anyway. I think the idea that people commit crimes against individuals, such as a heterosexual male killing an out gay male, because they are secretly have gay feelings, is just not true. People like to come up with simple explanations for human behavior, and that's a simple explanation. Straight male has gay feelings he can't accept, therefore he rapes gay male. False. I agree with the others that rape is about power and control. It isn't about sex. Furthermore, I don't understand why certain crimes are labeled "hate crimes." To me, every severe crime is a hate crime. It shouldn't be separated by race or sexual orientation. The ultimate act is the same, and hate is involved no matter who the victim or the perpetrator is.
