I'm from Western NC and want to travel to Oregon and will likely be near Portland while I'm there. I need a sabbatical so to speak and I have enough money for living expenses for a few months. I will likely mostly be camping a few hours away or staying at hostels and the occasional hotel. Employment isn't my primary concern (and I'm sure many of you will sigh in relief as you realize this fact) but if I did find some type of menial job I would consider staying for possibly longer than a few months.

I am just wondering how easy it would be for an out of state resident to find work without a permanent address in the area? Surely employers would understand I wouldn't want to commit to a lease without employment lined up but then again I don't know so here I am.

Trust me, I already realize how over-saturated the candidate pool for menial/coffee shop type jobs are, I'm asking if its even possible for someone in my position.

Temp agencies are about your best bet. You can do one of the Labor Ready sites where you get paid for work that day.

Here is a list of Portland's temp agencies that I put together a couple of years ago. Portland Temp Agencies List

If you come during harvest season, you may be able to find work picking apples or some other similar labor. Some years the farms are overflowing labor and other years, they're desperate.
