Im asking for suggestions about living near National College of Natural Medicine in Portland. I have a dog, prefer an inexpensive, smaller flat or room for rent. I'm a holistic physician, early 30's, male relocating from western Montana. Any help, ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated because I know nothing about Portland!

Thanks,

Dr. Ryan

What do you consider inexpensive?

Their campus is located in a tough-to-get-to spot. The nearest housing would be in the Lair Hill and Corbett neighborhoods (be aware that there is a town by the name of Corbett, don't confuse the locations in a search). The least expensive ($995) I could find is this listing Vintage Charmer in S. Waterfront/John's Landing Close- In

Here is a more expensive listing ($1,300) in a new building which you could consider: ▌▌▌▌New 1x1; 13th Floor w/ Astonishing Downtown View.
There is a building to the left of the light that looks like a star, a former grade school building, which is your college.

Where the college is located is a neighborhood of older homes. You'd probably be able to find shared housing there, which is your best bet for inexpensive.

Here's a CraigsList listing, for example.

The school is located in a very confused, high traffic area. But the above listing is just few blocks via a pedestrian overpass away from the campus.

This housing may work for you: University Pointe at College Station - Mobile Version The advertise as convenient to NCNM but I am baffled as to how you would get there by transit (this isn't in a car friendly area).

How big is your dog? Many properties have breed restrictions (any purebred or mix of German Shepard, Rottweiler, Staffordshire Terrier, Pitbull...).

With the Gibbs Street Pedestrian Bridge, you might be able to find something in SW Waterfront. The area is full of dogs. There are plenty of deals out there to entice increased vacancy. I'm privy to the area since I just moved there with my big dog. It was a big leap of faith for me having just moved back to Portland from Colorado... Depending on your time frame and income, you might want to check out Gray's Landing | Portland Oregon . It is opening in December 2012 with affordable housing restrictions.

The John's Landing area is really nice. You might be able to find a house share or older apartment for rent. The #43 bus runs along SW Corbett Ave which could make for a 10-15 minute ride to work. You're also a couple of blocks from the river with a running path.

If you have a question about a particular building or location, let me know!
