Just wondering - did anyone see this article about Portland's apparently growing heroin problem?

Welcome to Heroin City

I don't think that's all that new a fact. I wish the news could be more like this is diminishing rather than increasing.

There's drug culture everywhere, I guess. I was just kind of surprised that such a small city is supposedly the heroin hub for the entire Pacific Northwest.

Methodone is pretty popular here too. That's pseudoephedrine one of the main ingredients requires a prescription in Oregon. In other states, it's stored behind the pharmacist's counter but a prescription is not needed.

It has a "big town" feel. (Seattle borders on having a "big city" feel). Seriously, when one goes from I-84 west to I-5 north and has 2 lanes to contend with after the merge, it doesn't feel like a "big city" at all. PDX's version of the "good ole boy network" ensured that it remain that way.

this is one thing i would thank that "good ole boy network" for.

i like portland's vibe, and it's "big town" feel has everything to do with that. i wouldn't like it to be seattle 2.0.

on that note, i've always thought of portland as having "urban village" feel.

I'm curious what you mean by that.

There was a huge public backlash against building more freeways in the 1960's. The original plan called for about 8 more freeways then we got. The backlash ultimately led to the destruction of the west side one and the creation of Tom McCall Waterfront Park.

This was all very much citizen driven at first, although the politicians certainly jumped on the bandwagon (with a few notable and not well thought of today examples,) when they sensed which way things were going.
